Dry Ingredients

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour Provides fiber and nutrients.
  • 0.5 cup unsweetened cocoa powder Adds rich chocolate flavor.
  • 0.5 tsp baking soda Helps the brownies rise.
  • 0.25 tsp salt Enhances the flavors.

Wet Ingredients

  • 0.5 cup unsweetened applesauce Replaces some of the fat.
  • 0.25 cup coconut oil Adds moisture and healthy fats.
  • 0.5 cup maple syrup Natural sweetener.
  • 2 eggs Adds structure and richness.
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract Enhances the flavor.

Optional

  • 0.25 cup chocolate chips Add to the batter or sprinkle on top.

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line an 8x8 inch baking pan with parchment paper.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together whole wheat flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.

  • In a large bowl, combine applesauce, melted coconut oil, maple syrup, eggs, and vanilla extract. Mix well.

  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.
  • If using, fold in chocolate chips.

  • Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread evenly. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with moist crumbs.
  • Let the brownies cool completely in the pan before cutting into squares and serving.

Notes

For a richer flavor, use dark chocolate chips. Store leftover brownies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
