Coughing made easier with natural remedies

This article mainly focuses on persistent coughing. The anecdotes are a great place to look for natural remedies that may help, especially when other medicines have not worked.

What sort of coughing?

A cough is your body’s way of clearing out your lungs and throat. It helps remove dust, mucus, and germs. You might have a dry cough (no mucus) or a chesty cough (with mucus). If your cough lasts more than 3 weeks, it’s worth paying attention. If it lasts more than 8 weeks, it’s considered chronic and should be checked by a health professional.

Long-lasting coughs can happen after a virus, with asthma, sinus drainage, reflux, certain medicines, lung conditions, heart issues, or infections. Staying hydrated and avoiding heavy dairy may help reduce mucus for some people.

Below are commonly shared home remedies. These are traditional uses, not guaranteed cures.

Anecdotes

Mullein Remedies

Mullein is often used to support the lungs and help loosen mucus.

Mullein Tea (Basic Use)
Use ½–1 teaspoon dried mullein leaves per cup of hot water.
Steep 10–15 minutes, strain well.
Drink up to 3 times daily.

Stronger Mullein Blend
4 dried mullein leaves
½ cup water
½ orange (sliced)
¼ cup honey
1 cinnamon stick or 1 tsp cinnamon
2–3 cloves garlic

Bring to a boil, then simmer 15 minutes until slightly thick.
Take 1 tablespoon as needed for cough.

Some people report coughing more at first as mucus loosens.

Thyme Remedies

Thyme is traditionally used as a cough suppressant and expectorant. It contains thymol, a natural compound with antimicrobial and antispasmodic properties.

Chew about 1 teaspoon dried thyme slowly for 1–2 minutes, then spit out.
Used occasionally for sudden congestion.

Thyme Tea
2 teaspoons dried thyme
1 cup boiling water
Optional: lemon, ginger, honey
